It’s never too late to correct your smile…
Orthodontic treatment is about a change in you for the better, no matter what your age. It can give you the confidence and pride that comes with straight teeth and a great smile!
The fact is, when left untreated, many orthodontic problems may get worse. Crowded or spaced teeth may be harder to clean and maintain. Given time, crowding may contribute to tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss. Poor occlusions (bad bites) can contribute to uneven wear of your teeth that can result in pain when chewing.
Recently studies have shown a relationship between poor oral health and compromised general health especially with respect to heart disease, low birth weight, and diabetes. Healthy teeth and gums will not only benefit your smile, but your whole body.
Today, orthodontic treatment has become normal for people of all age groups. Technology has made the experience much less invasive and allows orthodontists to produce the best result with fewer visits and shortened treatment times.
Metal brackets are much smaller and more comfortable then they used to be. No longer do patients feel like a “metal mouth”, as most brackets are fastened to the surface of the tooth and do not wrap around the tooth. Even less noticeable are the clear (ceramic) braces we offer at Dr. Daniels office.
Another improvement are nickel-titanium-alloy archwires. These wires are temperature sensitive and allow for continuous movement of the teeth over longer periods of time. This means enhanced comfort for our patients, decreased treatment times, and fewer trips to the orthodontist.
Oral Hygiene
Good oral hygiene is a big part of orthodontics. Poor oral hygiene will compromise orthodontic treatment, oral health, and general health. We understand that even good brushers can have a difficult time once braces or other fixed appliances are delivered.
We know to get the best orthodontic results, we must start with healthy teeth and gums. When food particles accumulate on teeth and around braces it turns into plaque over time. When left on teeth, the bacteria in plaque can cause damage to tooth enamel and lead to gum disease. Not brushing also causes white spots to form on teeth under the braces.
The best way to keep your teeth clean is with regular brushing and flossing!
Brushing
Using a soft bristled brush (or a Sonicare) and fluoride toothpaste, you should brush your teeth at least four times per day - after breakfast, after lunch (or right after school), after dinner, and before going to bed.
Hold the brush at an angle and brush slowly and carefully, making sure to cover all tooth surfaces. Small circular motions work best to reach food particles that accumulate along the gum line and around braces. The tip of your brush is also an excellent tool to help reach under the wire and between the bracket and color tie. Don’t forget to brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth every time you brush your teeth!
Floss cleans the areas between teeth that a toothbrush has a difficult time reaching. It does take a little longer to floss when you are wearing braces, but it is very important to do so every day!
We will give you floss threaders and show you how to floss under your wires. When you first begin flossing around your braces, your gums may bleed a little. The bleeding should stop within a few days after you begin your flossing routine.
In order to protect your smile, Dr. Daniels suggests that while playing active sports his patients wear a mouthguard. Mouthguards can be purchased at any local sporting goods store or pharmacy. We can also make a custom mouthguard for you at our office for a fee. Ask about mouthguards at your next appointment.
